The Poisoner by I. V. Ophelia | A Review

What's Up, Readers!!

Welcome to Quills and Pages. Today I am reviewing one of the hottest books I read this year; The Poisoner by I.V. Ophelia. LOL!! I know it's only January but it is what it is 💁....I would love to see if any other book tops this one. I have read some very varied reviews on this one but in my opinion, I think this was a really great book. So, Let's start the review.

BLURB

"Have you ever wondered how long it would take for a lethal dose of arsenic to kill you?

Thirty-five hours, twenty-nine minutes, and fifteen seconds.

I should know. I counted myself."

Amidst the gaslit alleys and cobblestone streets of Victorian London, two killers find themselves entangled in a waltz they cannot escape.

Alina Lis, a botanist and hobbyist poisoner, has a pastime of killing unsavory men in her twisted sense of poetic justice. When she targets the conceited playboy, Silas Forbes, only to find him in her apothecary the following week, she discovers human men are the least of her problems.

The pair’s unlikely association sparks gossip among affluent society. As their mysterious bond deepens, a chilling truth emerges—concealed identities, lurking foes, and questions as plentiful as the hydra’s head brew within this haunting Gothic tale of violent passion.

Will Silas and Alina find themselves in each other's arms, or will the shadows of their past keep them apart?

MY REVIEW
The reviews I read before starting this book made me think maybe this book is not for me. But you know I was curious....and I cannot pass a book that has so many controversial views. Now that I am thinking I usually like books with controversial reviews and I do not like books that are social media popular. So, what does it say about me 😅😂. Anyway, I started reading the book and I was sucked in.

The vibe of this book is kinda similar to Haunting Adeline....a mansion where our FMC is all alone and things happen to her lol. Another thing I am attracted to is the integration of botany in fiction and fantasy. I love such books.  The female main character has a botanical shop and she creates poison from them. I love a story with cozy and lingering horror elements.

I am very much impressed by the characters. This book represents morally great. no one in the story is a good person. they do things because that's what they should be doing so if you don't have the stomach to handle morally grey people in the real sense I would suggest don't pick it up. It is also not a romantic story.....there is no romance here.....there is only mad obsession. there is no hero only mad anti-heroes. Anyway, I loved the book ❤

P.S. The special edition book cover is insanely good.

A Critical Lens on 'Hunting Adeline' by H.D. Carlton: Exploring the Disturbing Themes | A Review

I kept delaying writing the review because I had to remember it and didn't want to do that. This 2nd book of Cat and Mouse duet is the story of a human trafficking survivor. This book is a huge  TRIGGER WARNING . Kindly proceed with caution. I even got traumatized after reading it. So to explain the synopsis; Adeline (the main character) got kidnapped at the end of the first book and sold to some people who groomed her for some very rich and powerful clients.  Almost half of the book is based on Adeline surviving the worst situations possible for a woman. Adeline had one advantage someone was fervently searching for her, and eventually, Zade managed to rescue her after four agonizing months. The scene when Zade finds her and she just could not believe it. She crumbled to her knees thinking she was hallucinating. After Zade brings her home she struggles so hard to process her trauma. She learns to fight to take control of her life. She gets close to her mother. She hates h...

'The Never King' by Nikki St. Crowe | A Review

"The Never King" by  Nikki St. Crowe   is an incredibly absurd book. I mean, while reading it, I found myself perplexed, cringing, and wondering what on earth I was actually reading. These rollercoaster emotions I experienced throughout the book. The story revolves around Peter Pan and the Lost Boys, with Winnie, a member of the Darling family line, whose mother is clearly mentally unstable. Her mother's bizarre and neglectful behavior towards her is maddening. When Winnie turns 18, her mother's insanity escalates as she believes Peter Pan is coming to kidnap Winnie, and indeed, he does just that. He takes her to Neverland, where he inexplicably chains her to a bed and watches over her while she's unconscious. The frequent mention of Winnie being different from other Darlings without a clear explanation becomes rather tiresome. Meanwhile, Peter's shadow is lost, causing Neverland to wither slowly. So his main goal is to find his shadow and secure his power o...

I was on a free trial of Scribd and Everand. This particular book popped up and I thought let's do it. So I started listening to this book. I mean I am speechless after listening to it. My mind is in short-circuit mode..LOL!!! I listened to it in November and I am late in writing this review. So, let's explore... The brief synopsis of this book is that the plot picks up from the ending of the last book (this is the second book in the series of Lost Vicious Boys). War is coming and I don't know which war and with whom. the Prince brothers confront their sister and find out some new secrets of hers and how she is the manipulative one.
